Early in 2003, CCI Designed, Implemented and built prototypes for a new avionics product that manages aircraft cockpit datalinks for a leading supplier of communication technology for the aviation industry. This product processes Motorola GPS data and forwards packets via modem to the Iridium Satellite network. Additionally, the pilot is presented with a web interface to send/receive messages, manipulate sensors, and change system parameters. The system is designed around a Rabbit microprocessor with multiple serial ports and Ethernet interface, and includes a GPS engine, battery backup with a wide voltage capability, and a dual antenna design.
Later in the year, with one particular field unit used in a polar expedition, the product was instrumental in the rescue of two downed pilots. The December 22 article has refers to the product we built and mentions some of its capabilities.
